Its a decent start, I wanted to continue to read, but if you want to have a beginning that captures your readers of the first sentence, you need more mystery and perhaps to begin in an action or converstation. But the beginning is good enough as it is. There were many "I did this when I did" try to see if you can remove some of I.
I personally do not see anything wrong with what you wrote. It's not exciting, but nothing really bad about it. It's pretty interesting, but you do not engage the reader with visual imagery to about the halfway point. I also think it would read better if the story was told in the third person, but that's just me.
